HONOLULU, Hawaii -- Backed by a school-record 20 strikeouts from the Wolverine pitching staff, the No. 19 University of Michigan baseball team forced a 10-inning 5-4 victory over the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors on Friday night (March 12) from Les Murakami Stadium.
Both teams went scoreless in the first inning, and it was Michigan that took to the scoreboard first in the contest with a run in the top of the second. After two strikeouts gave Michigan two outs, sophomore Drew Lugbauer sent a 2-2 single up the middle, sparking some momentum for the Wolverine offense. Junior Johnny Slater then stepped to the plate, blasting an RBI double down the right field line and scoring Lugbauer from first to give Michigan a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, however, Hawaii took advantage of a double and two wild pitches, tying the game at 1-1.
Neither team scored in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Wolverines took back the lead in the top of the sixth on timely hits
Sophomore Jake Bivens led off the sixth inning with a double, taking third on a flyout. Junior Carmen Benedetti then came up with a clutch single up the middle, scoring Bivens for the second lead of the contest. The following walk to junior Harrison Wenson then gave Michigan two baserunners, and it was senior Cody Bruder who sent a timely RBI single to the opposite side of the field to score Benedetti from second and push the Wolverines ahead, 3-1.
Despite a scoreless seventh and eighth, the Wolverine offense was relentless, adding another run in the top of the ninth. Lugbauer led off the inning with a first-pitch single to right field, taking second base when Hawaii's right-fielder mishandled the ball. With Lugbauer on second, Slater laid down a sacrifice bunt that resulted in another defensive error, putting runners on the corners for Michigan with no outs. One out later, freshman Ako Thomas laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring Lugbauer for the 4-1 lead.
Refusing defeat, the Rainbow Warriors launched a two-out rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs on three hits and a walk to tie the game at 4-4 and push the contest to extra innings.
In the top of the 10th inning, however, Michigan again regained the lead on an RBI single from Wenson that scored senior Matt Ramsay for the game-winner.
Junior lefty Brett Adcock took the mound for the Wolverines in the victory, tossing seven complete innings and striking out a career-high 12 Rainbow Warriors in the outing. He allowed just two hits, walking two and allowing an earned run in the bottom of the third.
Sophomore reliever Bryan Pall tossed the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings, recording six strikeouts allowing three runs on three hits. He earned the victory on the night for his first of the year.
With Michigan taking a 5-4 lead in the 10th, junior Keith Lehmann took the mound, striking out two and recording a flyout for the final out of the contest. He earned his first save of the season in the outing.
The Wolverine pitching staff combined for a school-record 20 strikeouts on the night, allowing just five hits and walking four.
