ATLANTA, Ga. -- Freshman Siobhán Haughey became the third University of Michigan women's swimmer to earn NCAA All-America honors at this year's NCAA Championships, finishing fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.35) on Friday (March 18) inside the McAuley Aquatic Center. After three days of competition, the Wolverines sit in 13th place (74 points).
Haughey is the program's 11th NCAA All-American in the 200-yard freestyle and first since Lindsey Smith in 2007. She came into the meet holding the Big Ten and U-M records (set last month at the Big Ten Championships) but lowered both marks with Friday's finals swim. Along with Ali DeLoof (50-yard freestyle) and Yirong Bi (500-yard freestyle), the Wolverines have put three different swimmers on the podium at the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2007 (Smith in the 200-yard freestyle, Emily Brunemann and Emily Hanson in the 1,650-yard freestyle).

The other swimmer in action on Friday was DeLoof, who strung together another phenomenal performance in her final collegiate meet. During the morning's preliminaries, the senior captain further lowered her Big Ten and U-M record in the 100-yard backstroke (51.21), the third-fastest time in conference history. Though she missed qualifying for the final by .05 seconds, her 11th-place finish (51.37) marks a gigantic improvement over her swim last year, when she took 31st (53.16).
Though those two were the only ones to earn second swims on Friday, several other swimmers were at or near career bests and improved on seed times, none more evident than sophomore Gabby DeLoof. The sophomore pulled the backstroke/freestyle double during the morning, setting a career best in the 100-yard backstroke (53.59) and coming within .02 seconds of her best in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.73). Freshman Becca Postoll cut almost a second off her career best in the 200-yard freestyle, posting a time that ranks sixth in U-M history (1:45.84).
Senior captain Marni Oldershaw put up a season-best time in the 400-yard IM (4:09.69) and finished 18th, while sophomore Emily Kopas moved up five spots from her seed time to finish 30th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.77). The 200-yard medley relay missed the consolation final by one spot (1:37.79), but its final place -- 17th -- was six spots better than its seed (they were seeded 23rd out of 23 teams) and 10 spots better than its finish last year (27th).
Two of the team's divers were in action earlier in the day on the three-meter springboard. Junior Allie Murphy and senior Sarah Kamstra each turned in solid performances, finishing 24th (295.30) and 28th (291.30), respectively.
The Wolverines conclude the collegiate season tomorrow (Saturday, March 19) at the NCAA Championships. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m., with finals starting at 6 p.m.
