ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After seeing an early 3-0 advantage turn into a 4-3 halftime deficit, the University of Michigan women's lacrosse team scored six unanswered goals and held Duquesne scoreless in the second half to earn a 9-4 victory and its fifth win of the season on Sunday (March 20) inside Michigan Stadium.
A balanced attack was one of the keys to Michigan's success, with seven players getting on the score sheet. Juniors Lauren Oberlander and Tess Korten co-led the team with two goals each, and juniors Anna Schueler, Kelly Schlansker, Kim Coughlan, Allie Breitfeller and Jess Angerman each contributed a goal. Angerman also had two assists, both of which came on Oberlander's goals. Junior Madeline Dion was a major key to the solid defensive performance, causing five of the Dukes' 21 turnovers on her own.
The Maize and Blue came out with a scoring barrage, peppering the Duquesne net with three goals in the first three minutes. Korten opened the scoring 1:50 into the game, and then Angerman found Oberlander to double the lead just 37 seconds later. Schlansker provided the third score 34 seconds later, giving Michigan three goals in a span of 1:11.
The early lead evaporated soon after, however. The Dukes scored at the 25:23 mark to put some life into their offense. Duquesne scored three more goals before the end of the half, including a man-up goal with 19:57 remaining, while the Wolverines went without a goal for the final 27 minutes of the opening half. The momentum switch sent the Wolverines into the half down by one, 4-3.
Michigan regained its offensive rhythm just 49 seconds into the second half. Angerman spun free of her defender and beat the Duquesne goalie Jenna Bishop to tie the game 4-4. The Wolverines added three more in the next five minutes courtesy of a precision free-position shot from Korten, which was then followed up by Oberlander's second goal of the afternoon. Schueler added the third to extend Michigan's lead to 7-4 with 24:26 remaining.
Breitfeller and Coughlan added insurance goals late in the half, and freshman Mira Shane goalie made a great save off a free-position shot in the final seconds to keep the Dukes off the board.
Overall, U-M won every statistical category en route to the victory -- shots (22-9), ground balls (19-10), draw controls (8-7), clears (U-M 9-10; DU 7-17) and turnovers (U-M 15; DU 21).
