ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team could not overcome a 6-0 second-half run by Colorado and eventually dropped an 11-4 decision to the Buffaloes on Sunday (March 27) inside Michigan Stadium.
Michigan got on the board first with a highlight goal from junior Natalie Carti, as she was fading out to the right and falling to the turf, with 22:52 left in the first half. After almost a 10-minute scoring drought for both teams, a pair of yellow cards on U-M led to back-to-back man-up goals by Colorado's Katie Macleay and Cali Castagnola, respectively. Castagnola added her second goal of the game just two minutes later to give CU a 3-1 lead at the 10:02 mark.
Michigan slowed the momentum with an unassisted goal from the left side by junior Anna Schueler with 6:49 to go in the half. However, Colorado answered right back with a goal of its own just 55 seconds later, which proved to be the last goal of the half and give the Buffs a 4-2 advantage at the break.
In the early minutes of the second half, both teams got off two shots, but neither team could find the back of the net until Colorado's Castagnola netted her third of the game at 21:36 (5-2). That goal started a 6-0 second-half run for the Buffs and gave them seven straight goals, going back to the first half.
The Buffaloes led 10-2 with 12:34 to play, when Colorado found itself on the other end of a yellow card. Johnna Fusco was flagged at 10:21 and junior Madeline Dion capitalized on the man-up opportunity on the assist from junior Allie Breitfeller from the left wing.
The two teams traded goals in the final three minutes of play, with junior Tess Korten netting her first of the game with 1:32 remaining.
Michigan was slightly edged, 21-19, in shots, however just 10 attempts were on target and six were saved by CU goalie Paige Soenksen. For the first time this season, the Wolverines were perfect on the clear, going 14-for-14, while Colorado was 12-for-19 and committed 15 turnovers, 12 of which were caused by the Maize and Blue.
The Wolverines' next matchup against Ohio State on Saturday, April 2, at 4 p.m. is the second game of a doubleheader with the U-M men's lacrosse team at Michigan Stadium. The men will host Maryland at 1 p.m. The two programs, in collaboration with the One Love Foundation, are joining together to host the second annual Game for Change to promote relationship violence awareness.
