ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A two-run home run in the sixth and a six-run eighth inning pushed the No. 23-ranked University of Michigan baseball team to a 10-2 win over UIC on Friday night (March 25) in the Wolverines' home opener at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The 11-hit victory marks the eighth game in a row that Michigan has out-hit its opponent.
Sophomore Oliver Jaskie took the mound for Michigan in the win, holding UIC to just two runs on six hits through seven complete innings. The lefty starter struck out six and walked three in the outing, improving to 4-1 on the season.
Following Jaskie, freshman William Tribucher, junior Mac Lozer and freshman Troy Miller combined to pitch the final two innings for Michigan, allowing just two hits and stranding both runners. The trio faced eight batters in total.
The first four innings of the contest went quickly, as each team recorded just one hit through four at-bats. In the top of the fifth, however, UIC got on the scoreboard with two hits and a walk to force a 1-0 lead.
Despite the slow offense at the start of the game, Michigan answered back in the bottom of the fifth inning with two runs of its own. Junior Cody Bruder led off the inning with a double to left-centerfield and scored easily on the following RBI single from sophomore Drew Lugbauer. One out later, junior Michael Brdar sent an RBI double down the leftfield line to give Michigan runners on the corners, and a UIC error on the next play allowed Lugbauer to score for a one-run Michigan lead.
UIC strung together three hits in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2, but a two-run home run off the bat of junior Harrison Wenson in the bottom of the inning pushed the Wolverines up, 4-2.
The Flames did not score again for the rest of the game, but a six-run outing in the bottom of the eighth inning pushed Michigan up by a 10-2 score that UIC could not overcome. Five Wolverines recorded hits in the inning, with junior Carmen Benedetti registering two doubles in the inning as Michigan batted around the order.
On the day, Michigan tallied 11 hits to UIC's eight, which marks the eighth straight game that the Wolverines have out-hit an opponent. Eight of nine starters recorded a hit on the day, while Benedetti, Wenson and Brdar each tallied two. Sophomore Jake Bivens' single in the eighth extends his hit streak to 15 games.
