ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team held a one-goal lead with 20 minutes remaining but was outscored 5-3 down the stretch, coming up just short, 10-9, against No. 18 Ohio State in today's (Saturday, April 2) Big Ten opener for both teams inside Michigan Stadium.
Today's matchup also marked Michigan's second annual Game for Change. The men's and women's lacrosse programs, in collaboration with the One Love Foundation, have joined together to "Unite against Relationship Violence." To educate fans, tables were set up on the concourse with handouts containing information about relationship violence awareness, while U-M men's and women's student-athletes appeared on the video boards throughout the two games, mentioning facts and statistics. A commemorative banner was also signed by all teams involved and displayed on the concourse for fans to sign and pledge their commitment to making a change.
The Big Ten opener, which saw snow and chilly temperatures for the majority of the contest, opened with a goal from the Buckeyes at 21:09. The Wolverines answered right back as Jess Angerman fed fellow junior Tess Korten for the quick score at 20:10. Kim Coughlan then scored two of her game-high five goals in less than two minutes to give the Maize and Blue a 3-1 advantage. Ohio State netted the final three goals of the first half to take a 4-3 lead into the halftime break.
Out of the break, Korten helped Michigan tie the game, as she drove around the top, faked a toss to Coughlan and put a hard bounce shot passed OSU keeper Katie Frederick (4-4, 28:35).
Coughlan regained the lead for Michigan, scoring back-to-back goals to put the Wolverines up 6-5 with 20:56 left to play.
The Buckeyes responded, scoring five unanswered goals in a 10-minute span to take its largest lead of the game, 10-6, with 9:08 remaining in the game. OSU won three of four draw controls during that span.
Trailing 10-6, Michigan called timeout to regroup. Out of the timeout, Kelly Kubach won the draw, which led to an unassisted goal by Korten, as she drove the crease and scored diving to the turf. With 5:10 left, Coughlan converted a free-position attempt to make it 10-8 OSU. The Wolverines kept clawing back, and Anna Schueler fed Angerman for the score with 23 seconds remaining to pull U-M within one, 10-9. Ohio State won the ensuing draw to keep U-M from getting a final look at the goal.
U-M committed just 11 turnovers, tying a season low, while causing 11 of Ohio State's 16 turnovers. Goalie Allison Silber made a season-high 10 saves, including five in each half.
