LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team wrapped up its 2016 spring trip with a 1-1 record after dropping a 13-4 decision at No. 11 USC on Friday (March 4) at McAlister Field. The Wolverines started the trip with a 10-6 win at San Diego State on Tuesday (March 1).
Junior Tess Korten gave Michigan and early 1-0 lead just two minutes into the game as she caught the ball in transition, drove along the left side of the crease and then roll-dodged back to the middle for the right-handed score.
USC then answered back with five unanswered goals, with all five goals coming from different players, to take a 5-1 lead by the 11:53 mark. Michigan won the ensuing draw and called timeout after settling in on offense. When play resumed, junior Kim Coughlan drove to goal and drew a foul. She ended USC's run, converting on a free-position goal from the left hash, to cut the Trojans' lead to three, 5-2, with 10:38 left in the opening half.
USC ended the half with four straight goals, including two from Michaela Michael to give her a first-half hat trick, and the Trojans took a 9-2 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, both teams were held scoreless for the first 15-plus minutes. USC called timeout at 16:27, and shots were 6-1 in Michigan's favor, but neither team could find the back of the net. USC's Michael ended the drought, scoring a free-position goal with 14:50 left to play, to give the Trojans a 10-2 advantage.
Junior Emily Braun caused turnover and ground ball on the defensive end, which led to Michigan's first goal in more than 30 minutes, as junior Lauren Oberlander drove down the right side of the eight-meter arc and shot high, catching the top right corner of the net. USC led 10-3 with 10:25 left on the clock.
The Trojans answered with three consecutive goals to push their lead to 13-3 with 1:33 to play. Korten notched the last goal of the game, as she converted a free-position goal from the right hash with 16 ticks on the clock to produce the final score of 13-4.
U-M goalies, junior Allison Silber and freshman Mira Shane split halves in the cage with Silber making six stops in the first half and Shane coming up with two saves in the second half.
Up next, the Wolverines will remain on the road for their next contest when they travel to High Point, North Carolina, to take on High Point University on Sunday, March 13, at noon.
