COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Just eight days after winning the Big Ten championship, eight members of the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team were back in the water at the OSU Last Chance Meet on Sunday (March 6), held inside the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The purpose of the meet was to improve on season-best times in hopes of individually qualifying for the NCAA Championships later this month.
The official selections for the championships will be announced on Wednesday (March 9).
Though all eight swimmers picked up NCAA B cuts, only two were able to shave time off their previous season bests, and both of them did in in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Junior Cameron Stitt went 15:09.12 (down from 15:09.76), while freshman Blake Maczka -- who did not swim at the Big Ten Championships -- went 15:09.13 (down from 15:13.68).
Other swims came from junior Vinny Tafuto in the 50-yard freestyle (20.10) and 100-yard butterfly (47.80), sophomores Ian Rainey and Ryan Sebastian in the 400-yard IM (3:48.84 and 3:54.31, respectively), graduate student Kyle Dudzinski in the 100-yard backstroke (47.17), senior/junior Luke Papendick in the 200-yard backstroke (1:43.26) and freshman Jordan Ross in the 200-yard backstroke (1:44.14).
Freshman diver Collin DeShaw will compete at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships, set for Thursday through Saturday (March 10-12) at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Indiana.
