ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team earned a decisive 13-1 victory over Niagara on Tuesday (April 12) inside Michigan Stadium to snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 6-8 on the season.
Seven different players scored for the Maize and Blue, led by hat tricks from juniors Tess Korten and Kelly Schlansker and two goals each from junior Natalie Carti and junior Jess Angerman. Schlansker, who has been restricted by a knee injury most of the season, is working to return to full strength and set a new career high with her three goals.
Michigan's 12-goal win is its second-largest margin of victory this season and third largest in program history. The Wolverines outshot the Purples Eagles, 32-13, and won the draw control battle, 10-6, thanks to a game-high six draw controls from junior Anna Schueler, which match her career high.
Defensively, U-M caused a program-record 16 turnovers, led by a career-high four caused turnovers from junior Kelly Kubach, who continues to lead the Wolverines in caused turnovers this season with 23, which put her third in the Big Ten.
After both teams struggled to score for nearly 14 minutes, Michigan scored the game's first goal in transition, as Angerman fed Korten just outside the crease for the opening goal. The Wolverines built a 4-0 lead, before Niagara got its first goal just before the eight-minute mark in the first half. With time winding down in the opening half, sophomore Mae Tarr found Carti in the middle for her 13th goal of the season with two ticks left to give U-M a 6-1 advantage at the break.
In the second half, Michigan freshman goalie Mira Shane entered the game and eventually finished with five saves on shots at point-blank range. Shane did not allow a goal in the second half.
The Wolverines tacked on seven more goals, including tallies from junior Lauren Oberlander and junior/sophomore Bianca Brueckner. After a Niagara yellow card left U-M a man up, Bruckner capitalized on a free-position shot at 13:53 to tally her second goal of the season. Schlansker's third goal on an assist from Korten gave her a career high and Michigan a 12-1 lead with 10:02 remaining in the second half.
Korten scored the game's final goal with 7:07 left, giving the Wolverines a 13-1 lead. She finished with a game-high four points, adding an assist to her hat trick. Korten leads the Maize and Blue with five games scoring three or more goals this season and also has a team-best 31 points (28G, 3A).
With a victory in hand, several Wolverines quickly cleaned up and headed to the U-M Student-Athlete Recognition Celebration in Crisler Center, where student-athletes with a 3.0 grade-point average or higher are recognized and several other individual awards are presented. In total, 29 members of the women's lacrosse team earned U-M Athletic Academic Achievement honors for their efforts in the classroom.
Michigan will remain at home to host No. 10 Penn State on Sunday (April 17) at 1 p.m. inside Michigan Stadium. The game will be streamed live on MGoBlue.com.
