ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite outscoring the Nittany Lions, 4-3, in the second half, the University of Michigan women's lacrosse team could not overcome a six-goal halftime deficit and eventually fell to No. 10 Penn State, 13-8, on Sunday (April 17) inside Michigan Stadium.
Four different Wolverines scored goals for the Maize and Blue, led by junior Kim Coughlan, who returned to score four goals after missing the Niagara game due to injury. Junior Jess Angerman scored two goals and added an assist, while juniors Lauren Oberlander and Anna Schueler each added a goal of her own.
The beginning of the game was a back-and-forth battle until Penn State broke the game open with seven straight goals in the first half. Michigan got on the board first with Angerman driving the crease and scoring an unassisted goal at 28:38. After PSU quickly evened up the score at 27:21, Coughlan scored the first of her four goals with 25:12 left in the half to put Michigan up 2-1. Penn State then answered with seven straight goals until Angerman halted the Nittany Lion run with her second goal of the game at the 4:53 mark. Coughlan added another goal on a free-position attempt to cut into Penn State's lead, however, the Nittany Lions responded with two goals, including one with 15 seconds remaining, to take a 10-4 lead into the locker room. Three of PSU's first-half goals came on man-up situations as a result of U-M yellow cards.
Michigan got off to a hot start in the second half, getting three unanswered goals from Schueler, Oberlander and Coughlan to cut Penn State's lead down to three, 10-7, with 22:58 left. The two teams then traded goals, with Coughlan netting her fourth of the game at 17:43, but that proved to be U-M's final goal of the afternoon and PSU added two more at 14:12 and 6:37 to produce the final score of 13-8.
Prior to the game, several youth lacrosse teams from the state of Michigan competed in mini games at Michigan Stadium and participated in a pre-game chalk talk with head coach Jennifer Ulehla. Afterwards, the teams stuck around to cheer on the Maize and Blue and enjoy a beautiful day in the Big House before getting autographs from the Wolverines at the conclusion of the game.
Michigan will remain at home to host No. 1 Maryland in its final home game of the regular season on Saturday (April 23) at 1 p.m. inside Michigan Stadium. The game will be streamed live on MGoBlue.com.
