LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan women's track and field team began competition at Long Beach State University's Beach Invitational during Friday's (April 15) first day of action, competing at the Jack Rose Track.
U-M competed in the 5,000-meter run, hammer throw and javelin in Long Beach and will have entries in a number of events on the track, runway and in the circle on Saturday (April 16).
DISTANCE
U-M placed four athletes in the top 11 during the 5,000-meter run, led by junior/sophomore Sophie Linn, who placed fourth and second among collegians in 17:00.65.
Each of the five competing Wolverines ran in her first outdoor 5K, with sophomore/freshman Taleen Shahrigian (17:26.77), freshman Kayla Keane (17:27.14) and senior Olivia Brackett (17:35.85) placing 9-10-11.
Sophomore/freshman Ellie Leonard (17:48.05) also competed, running third in the first heat to place 15th overall.
THROWS
Freshman Elizabeth Prieskorn set a season and personal best in the javelin, throwing 33.70 meters (110-7 ft.) to place ninth in flight one.
Sophomore Bailey Baker led three Wolverines in the hammer throw, throwing 50.52 meters on her final attempt to place eighth in the third flight. Sophomore Kayla Deering threw 48.27 meters (158-04 ft.), placing sixth in flight two, while freshman Maegan McCarthy finished ninth in flight one, throwing 44.75 meters (146-10 ft.).
The Maize and Blue wraps up competition in Long Beach, California, with events beginning at 9 a.m. PDT with the long jump, and the 1,500 will closely follow at 9:32 a.m. at the Jack Rose Track.
