MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won its 32nd consecutive Big Ten regular-season match in a 4-3 victory at Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon (April 2) at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Michigan's Big Ten winning streak is now the longest in school history.
After dropping the doubles point in its last match, Michigan switched up its doubles lineup, and it paid off. U-M won on all three courts to enter singles play up 1-0.
Michigan jumped out to big leads on courts No. 2 and No. 3, hanging on for 6-4 wins on each court. Sophomores Alex Najarian and Mira Ruder-Hook were off first at No. 2, with junior Sara Remynse and senior Ronit Yurovsky teaming up for the win several minutes later at No. 3.
The teams played out the remaining match on court, with freshmen Brienne Minor and Kate Fahey breaking late for a 7-5 win.
The Wolverines extended their lead to 3-0 following singles wins from Najarian at No. 5 and Ruder-Hook at No. 4.
Wisconsin got two points back with wins at No. 2 and No. 6, cutting U-M's lead to 3-2.
Needing one more point to put the match away, Yurovsky rallied for a second-set tiebreaker win after suffering a late break in the set. At the same time, Fahey jumped out to a 3-1 lead in her third set at No. 3. Fahey kept the advantage the rest of the way, sealing Michigan's win with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory.
