EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team dropped its first Big Ten road contest of the season, 20-4, at No. 13 Northwestern on Thursday (April 7) at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium. The Wolverines were outscored 15-0 in the first half, but the second half was a different story, as U-M was edged by just one goal, 5-4, in the final 30 minutes.
Chicago native Anna Schueler led the Maize and Blue with two goals, while Jess Angerman and Tess Korten each added one apiece.
The Wildcats notched the first goal of the game 38 seconds in and by the 20-minute mark had built a 5-0 lead. With three minutes remaining in the first half and the Wolverines down 15-0, Michigan freshman goalie Mira Shane entered the game and made one save before the halftime buzzer. Northwestern sophomore Selina Lasota tallied five first-half goals to help give the 'Cats a 15-0 advantage at the break.
In the second half, Shane helped keep Northwestern from increasing its lead, making three saves in the first three minutes of play. The Wildcats eventually tacked on two more goals before Michigan's offense broke through. Angerman drove around the crease and dumped in a shot on the goal circle to record U-M's first score at 21:05. Less than two minutes later, Korten drove right around the top and curled toward goal, firing a high shot just over NU goalie Mallory Weisse's stick to make it 17-2 at 19:17.
The two teams traded goals for the remainder of the game, with Schueler finding the back of the net twice -- first at 12:35 on a drive around the crease and again with 2:34 remaining on a free-position attempt from the left hash.
Shane finished the game with nine saves for Michigan, tying her career high, which she set against Florida (Feb. 13).
Michigan will now return home for its final non-conference matchup of the season, hosting Niagara on Tuesday (April 12) at 5 p.m. inside Michigan Stadium.
