COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan women's track and field team completed events at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Classic on Saturday (April 23) at Jesse Owens Stadium. The sprints group led day two efforts for the Maize and Blue, highlighted by a strong day from junior Sami Michell and sophomore Meghan Marias.
Head coach James Henry found value in this weekend for both the Wolverines who competed and those who stayed in Ann Arbor.
"This week was important for us to rest up and work on a few ins and outs to make ourselves better," said Henry.
"In most areas, even in my group, we just ran a few events and didn't run all of our normal events. I know we are physically and emotionally drained from studying and all the hard work we are putting in to finish the school year on a strong note, in addition to what we've done on the track, so this is a good chance for us to take advantage."
Henry was encouraged by the performances he saw in the throws group, and in the sprints and hurdles, where U-M set several PRs and won multiple heats.
SPRINTS
Michell had a strong day for the Wolverines. She closed her weekend with a win in the 100-meter hurdles, timing 59.20, while senior/junior Emily Wee ran her second sub-minute race this year with a new PR of 59.48 for third place.
Earlier in the day, Michell was the top collegian in the 100-meter hurdles (13.78). She edged out Miami (Ohio) junior Alexus Jimson-Miller at 13.79. Freshman Lauren Rodriguez PRed to win her heat in 14.38.
The 4x100-meter relay of sophomore Meghan Marias, Long, Michell and Ofili ran 46.46 to win the second heat, finishing sixth overall.
Marias came back to win her heat in the 100-meter dash, timing a personal-best 12.03 seconds. That finish was an improvement of .08 seconds from her previous PR set earlier this month, and she also set a PR in the 200. She finished fourth in 24.72, marking the second time this month in which she has set 100 and 200-meter PRs at the same meet (Battle of the Blues, April 1-2).
THROWS
Sophomore Kayla Deering finished runner-up in the shot put, landing her final attempt of the first round at 14.48 meters (47-6 ft.) for her second runner-up finish in the shot this month. Deering also threw the hammer.
MID-DISTANCE/DISTANCE
Junior/sophomore Courtney Munley won her heat of the the 800-meter run after leading U-M at 1,500 meters last night. Munley's 800 came in 2:14.71, and like Friday's race, several Wolverines competed unattached.
POLE VAULT
Junior/sophomore Sarah Uhlian led a pair of athletes in the pole vault, tying for fifth after vaulting 3.80 meters (12-5.5 ft.).
The Maize and Blue will send athletes to four different locations next week, with athletes competing at the Penn Relays (Philadelphia, Pa.), Drake Relays (Des Moines, Iowa), Hillsdale Gina Relays (Hillsdale, Michigan) and Payton Jordan Invitational (Stanford, Calif.).
