
Wolverines Falter in Home Finale against No. 1 Terrapins

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team dropped an 18-8 decision to No. 1 Maryland in its final home game of the 2016 season on Saturday (April 23) inside Michigan Stadium.
Junior Anna Schueler led the Wolverines, notching a hat trick, while junior Kim Coughlan and junior Jess Angerman each added two goals. Junior Allie Breitfeller also scored for the Maize and Blue. Junior midfielder Madeline Dion led U-M's defense with four caused turnovers, three ground balls and one draw control. As a team, Michigan won the ground ball category by an 18-9 margin, while Maryland won the draw control battle, 18-10.
The Wolverines came out of the gates strong, registering the first three shots of the game, but missed the target twice, and UMD goalie Megan Taylor made one save. The Terrapins eventually scored the game's first two goals, jumping out to an early lead at 24:02.
Michigan got on the board a little more than seven minutes into the game with a goal by Angerman. Maryland then followed with a run of six consecutive goals in a span of 12:12 to take am 8-1 lead by the 10:36 mark. The Wolverines halted the Terrapins' momentum, as Coughlan scored her first goal of the game with 9:13 left in the first half to ignite a 3-0 Maize and Blue run. Angerman tacked on another goal 41 seconds later, as she carved through the Maryland defense for her second goal of the game. Coughlan capped the U-M run with her second goal of the day a little more than a minute later, cutting Maryland's lead to 8-4 (7:08).
The Terrapins followed up Michigan's run with two goals, before Schueler ripped a shot by Taylor to make the score 10-5 at 4:43. Maryland broke open the game, adding five goals in the last 3:14 of the opening half to give the Terrapins a 15-5 lead at the break.
In the second half, freshman Mira Shane replaced junior Allison Silber in net, after Silber made four saves in the first half.
Maryland scored the first three goals of the second half to take its largest lead of the game, 18-5, with 21:50 to play.
The Wolverines continued to fight and closed the game on a run, scoring the final three goals of the afternoon. Breitfeller came off the bench and scored quickly, as she curled around from behind the net and beat UMD goalie Emily Kift stick side with 11:10 left in the game. Schueler added an unassisted goal at the 9:53 mark and then completed her hat trick a little more than five minutes later, scoring the final goal of the day with 4:10 remaining. The second half proved to be an even affair, as both teams tallied three goals, to produce the final score of 18-8.
Today's game was a bittersweet moment for Silber, as today was the final of her career in Michigan Stadium. The Phoenix, Maryland, native is going to take advantage of the opportunity to graduate in December 2016 with a degree in movement science and will then begin preparations for medical school, including studying for the MCAT exam.
Michigan will hit the road for its regular-season finale at Rutgers on Saturday (April 30) at noon. The game will be played at High Point Solutions Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey.
