DES MOINES, Iowa -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan women's track and field team was represented by three athletes at the Drake Relays on Friday (April 29), with senior co-captain Cindy Ofili leading the way for U-M at the Knapp Center.
Ofili and junior Sami Michell both doubled, with Ofili running the 100-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles races and Michell running the 100 and 400-meter hurdles.
The Wolverine co-captain and Michell both opened with the short hurdles. Michell placed third in heat three with a season-best time of 13.73, and Ofili ran 13.14 to win the fourth heat by 0.5 seconds. She earned the top seed with one of three sub-13.2 times and will run in tomorrow's (Saturday, April 29) final at 2:30 p.m. CDT.
Later in the afternoon after an official's break, Michell came back to run the 400-meter hurdles, placing sixth in her heat and 13th overall after recording a time of 59.71.
Ofili came back a few hours later to run 11.57 and edge TCU sophomore Sabrina Moore at the line by .02 seconds in the fifth heat of the 100-meter dash. In doing so, Ofili also clinched the top seed in finals in both of her events for the weekend.
According to Mike Mahon, Ofili is seeking to become the first-ever woman to win both the 100-meter dash and hurdles at Drake Relays. The 100-meter dash is scheduled for 2:20 p.m. CDT; 10 minutes earlier than her hurdles final.
JUMPS
Sophomore Claire Kieffer-Wright finished fourth overall in the high jump, clearing 1.77 meters (5-9.5 ft.). Kieffer-Wright passed at 1.78 meters (5-10 ft.) to attempt 1.81 meters (5-11.25 ft.) but was unable to come over the bar. Only the winning athlete, Akron's Claudia Garcia Jou, cleared that height, and she also owns the No. 3 jump in the NCAA this year.
Events resume at the Knapp Center tomorrow at 7:30 a.m., but Ofili is Michigan's lone athlete competing. The Maize and Blue also has athletes at Hillsdale Relays and Payton Jordan Invitational this weekend.
