GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Paced by a career-best tie for eighth individual finish by sophomore Kathy Lim, the University of Michigan women's golf team tallied a 926 54-hole event total and moved up one spot today (Sunday, April 3), finishing 11th at the Bryan National Collegiate held at the Bryan Park Golf Course.
Heavy rains and thunderstorms delayed Friday's (April 1) opening 18 holes for almost four hours. When play finally began, U-M and the 15-team field saw scores skyrocket, as the Wolverines posted a season-high 314 team total, positioning themselves 12th, despite a promising opening-round 76 (+4) from Lim.
With off and on rains in Saturday's (April 2) second round, cloudy conditions were much more ideal for scoring as the Wolverines dropped 10 strokes, tallying a 304 team total. Lim again paced play with a 74 (+2), while junior Grace Choi carded a 75, and sophomore Megan Kim tallied a 77. With improved scoring for the Wolverines and across the leaderboard, U-M remained 12th after day two with a 618 total.
Lim posted a second straight 74 (+2), and senior Catherine Peters fired a 77, while Choi closed with a 78, as the Maize and Blue finished today with a 308.
"We had a challenging week, but this course gave us a great opportunity to work on our short games," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "As a team, our ball striking and our putting wasn't the best, which isn't a great combo on this layout. However, the players fought hard, and we know exactly what we need to do in the upcoming two weeks."
"This course and the weekend was a test for everyone," said Lim. "The first two days had rainy conditions, and today was super, super cold. All three days had high winds anywhere from 10-25 miles per hour, which is why I believe the scores were higher than usual."
With a 224 (76-74-74) total, Lim led the Wolverines for the first time this season with her second top-10 finish and career-best tie for eight.
"I'm so proud of Kathy," said Dowling. "She had an off week in Arizona and really worked hard on both her swing and short game. She came to practice each day with a purpose, and it paid off for her."
"My ball-striking wasn't the greatest, but I missed in the correct spots, which was key on this golf course," said Lim. "I really worked on my short game with coaches after a rough week in Arizona, and I think that was key to my consistency."
Following Lim was Choi, who posted her seventh top-50 individual finish of the season, tying for 42nd at 232 (79-75-78). Peters (81-78-77) and Kim (80-77-79) each tied for 51st, while sophomore Emily White rounded out the Wolverine starting five, tying for 65th with a 242 (79-81-82) total.
The Wolverines will now shift their focus to the postseason with the 2016 Big Ten Championships, set for Friday through Sunday, April 22-24. For the fifth straight season, the conference championship will be held at a neutral site -- the Fort Golf Course. The three-day, 54-hole event will determine the automatic bid to the NCAA regionals, which will be held May 5-7.
"This is a very exciting time of year in college golf, and we are excited to prepare for the Big Ten championship and beyond," said Dowling. "We know exactly what we need to work on, and we are committed to making these improvements."
