ROSEMONT, Ill. -- After U-M's perfect 5-0 week and a three-game sweep of Rutgers to continue conference play, University of Michigan baseball junior Carmen Benedetti was named the Big Ten Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon (May 10).
Benedetti finished the week with a team-leading .571 batting average, blasting a home run in a 12-5 win over Rutgers and earning an impressive 1.000 slugging percentage. The junior tallied a hit in every game on the week, including three three-hit performances.
A native of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, Benedetti finished the week with six runs and a team-leading 12 hits through 21 at-bats. He also knocked in a team-high 12 runs with six doubles and three walks. Benedetti, who has started all 46 games for Michigan this year, currently ranks second in the Big Ten Conference with a .484 on-base percentage.
Michigan is now on a five-game win streak and its 34-12 start to the season is the Wolverines' best since 1987. With three Big Ten Pitcher of the Week awards in the books and a Co-Player of the Week award, Benedetti earns Michigan's fifth Big Ten Weekly award this season.
In other Big Ten weekly awards, Illinois' Cody Sedlock was named Pitcher of the Week, while Nebraska's Chad Luensmann garnered Freshman of the Week honors.
With a 34-12 record in hand, the Wolverines will return to action on Wednesday (May 11) when they head to Central Michigan for a midweek non-conference matchup. First pitch for the single contest is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Mt. Pleasant.
