ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In an effort to positively impact children and youth in the Flint and the Michigan area that has been affected by the Flint water crisis, the University of Michigan Athletic Department and the Michigan baseball team will be hosting a book drive on Tuesday (May 17) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. All book proceeds will go directly to the Boys and Girls Club of Flint.
Thanks to a large outpouring of support from local and national partners, the Flint area has a surplus of clean water but now the community must battle the lasting effects that lead poisoning can have on developing children. Recently, the Community Foundation of Greater Flint implemented an initiative called the Flint Child Health and Development Fund in response to the water crisis. The fund addresses numerous priorities for children's needs in Flint, including a heavy focus on early childhood education.
Fans and supporters who bring a youth book (age 7-17) to Tuesday's game (May 17) will receive free admission. New or gently used books will be accepted.
Some of the suggested books are:
The Adventures of Captain Underpants: An Epic Novel (series) by Dave Pilkey
Big Nate (comic book series) by Lincoln Pierce
Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson
Clubhouse Mysteries (series) by Sharon Draper
The Crossover by Kwame Alexander
Diary of a Wimpy Kid (series) by Jeff Kinney
How Tia Lola Came to Stay by Julia Alvarez
I am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World by Malala Yousafzai
Julian (series) by Ann Cameron
Miami Jackson (series) by Patricia McKissack
Nikki & Deja by Karen English
One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia
The Rickshaw Girl by Mitali Perkins
Sideways Stories from the Wayside School (series) by Louis Sacher
Wonder by R.J. Palacio
The Tuesday (May 17) game will feature a non-conference matchup between the University of Michigan Wolverines and the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies. First pitch for the midweek contest is slated for 6 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
According to the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings, the University of Michigan is the 14th top university in the world and is one of just three public institutions in the U.S. in the top 20.
