PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team competed at Stanford's Payton Jordan Invitational on Sunday (May 1) at Cobb Track and Angel Field. The Wolverines took advantage of one of the nation's premier middle-distance and distance meets by posting a number of quality times while setting personal bests in three events.
Competing unattached as she continued her redshirt season while training for the U.S. Olympic Trials in July, junior Erin Finn competed in a pro field containing only one other active collegian, placing 13th overall with the U.S.A.T.F. Olympic standard (32:15) in hand.
Finn would have been the top collegian, and would have re-set another Michigan record with her time of 31:51.84, a lifetime best. She has now earned the right to run at the trials at both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter distances, having earned the 5K standard with a time of 15:23.16 at the Indoor NCAA Championships.
The leaders came in at 9:22 through 3,000 meters and 15:40 at 5,000 meters, with the chase pack about 11 seconds behind. Three athletes finished in under 31:20, with Irene Cheptai winning in 31:15.38 running for Nike.
MIDDLE-DISTANCE/DISTANCE
Wolverines past and present ran the 1,500, highlighted by a PR from senior Shannon Osika in the second section. She was the second collegian, finishing in 4:13.43. Fifth-year senior co-captain Devon Hoppe led three athletes in the fourth section, setting a four-second PR at 4:20.12.
In the third section, former U-M captain Brook Handler (2011-15) won with a time of 4:15.22 running for Saucony. It marks Handler's second win this month, as she took the BAA Mile title in Boston as well.
Senior Danielle Pfeifer ran in the fourth section of the 800, coming within .30 seconds of her PR with a time of 2:05.75
Senior/junior Gina McNamara set a new personal best in the early afternoon section of the 800, clocking 2:08.16 to finish third.
Fifth-year senior Anna Pasternak and junior/sophomore Sarah Zieve ran in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Pasternak led the way in 11th, running 10:23.30, while Zieve timed 10:31.09.
On the longer distance side of things, junior Gina Sereno ran 16:41.46 in section four of the 5,000-meter run. Her classmate Corinne Florie also ran, finishing eighth.
THROWS
Sophomore Kayla Deering neared her PR in the hammer throw, registering her second attempt at 49.03 meters (160-10 ft.), and also threw shot put later in the afternoon.
Freshman Elizabeth Prieskorn set a PR in the javelin, measuring 36.53 meters (119-10 ft.) on her opening throw. In five meets this season, Prieskorn has improved each week.
U-M is fast approaching the Big Ten Outdoor Championships (May 13-15) and will send just a small group of competitors to the Toledo Invitational (May 6) in Toledo, Ohio, next weekend.
