GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Led by a strong morning performance by the first varsity eight and first varsity four, and a great afternoon heat for the second varsity eight, the University of Michigan rowing team advanced to the A/B semifinals in all three boat classifications at the 2016 NCAA Rowing Championships on Friday (May 27) at Lake Natoma. It marks the third straight year that Michigan advanced all three boats to the A/B semifinals at the NCAA regatta.
The Wolverines' 1V8 finished second (6:21.885) in its heat to give Michigan a positive start to the day. The 1V8 jumped out in front of the pack along with Stanford in the first 500 meters of the race and held a narrow lead over the Cardinal through the 1,500-meter mark. Stanford pulled ahead late, but the Wolverines earned a spot in the A/B semifinal with a strong showing, going head to head with the No. 2 seed.
Michigan's 1V4 crew also needed just a morning heat to advance to the A/B semifinals with an impressive race. The Wolverines jumped out in front of the field, ahead of No. 3 seed Virginia and No. 6 seed Princeton, and maintained a half-boat length lead in front of the Cavaliers through the 1,000-meter mark. Michigan and Virginia broke away from Princeton in the second half of the race, and the 11th-seeded Wolverines earned a second-place finish with a time of 7:24.624.
The Wolverines' 2V8 needed an afternoon repechage heat to get to its A/B semifinal. After finishing fourth in morning heat No. 3 with a time of 6:43.168, Michigan rebounded in tougher afternoon conditions on Lake Natoma. Michigan started the repechage in third place behind Indiana and Yale through the opening 500 meters but pushed ahead of Indiana in the middle 1,000 meters of the race for second place and held off the Hoosiers to finish in 6:46.396, within a boat length of Yale.
The first varsity eight will row in the first A/B semifinal in Lane 3 at 8:36 a.m. (PT) against California, Ohio State, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Syracuse. Michigan's 2V8 crew will row in the first A/B semifinal at 9:24 a.m. (PT) in Lane 6 against Ohio State, Brown, Virginia, Texas, and Wisconsin. The 1V4 crew will race in Lane 3 against California, Washington, Texas, Brown, and Princeton in its A/B Semifinal at 10:12 a.m..
