GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- For the third straight year and the 14th time in 20 years as a varsity program, the University of Michigan rowing team earned a top-10 finish at the NCAA regatta, placing 10th at the 2016 NCAA Championships, which wrapped up today (Sunday, May 29) at Lake Natoma.
A strong start to the weekend placed the Wolverines' 1V4 crew -- Nadia Roohparvar (coxswain), Kinsey Vear, Lauren Gilbert, Mallory Jamett and Susie Stevens -- in the penultimate race, the first time the U-M four earned a spot in the NCAA Grand Final since 2003. Seeded 11th before the competition, Michigan stayed with the lead pack early, challenging Virginia for third through the first 1,000 meters of the race before taking sixth in 7:16.876.
Michigan's second varsity eight crew -- -- Emma Knorps (coxswain), Abby Vare, Rebecca Joyce, Adena Coste, Caroline Hendershot, Rachel Fanning, Karla McDaniel, Laura Foster and Rae Oleshansky -- raced in the 2V8 Petite Final, outpacing their 14th seeding coming into the regatta. The Wolverines settled into fourth through the first 500 meters, in touch with the lead pack of Brown, Yale and Stanford. But a strong finish by Wisconsin and Washington State put the U-M 2V8 narrowly in sixth at the finish line in 6:42.600.
In the 1V8 Petite Final, Michigan's first varsity eight -- Francesca Derteano (coxswain), Louisa Freeman, Kaitlin Wright, Kendall Brewer, Tessa Yurko, Shayla Lamb, Lexie Beemer, Meghan Gutknecht and Flick Cain -- took the lead in the first 500 meters of the race, battling Texas, Washington and Wisconsin in the lead pack. The Wolverines fell back into fifth in the middle 1,000 meters and finished in that position in 6:30.546.
The Wolverines' 1V8 earned 36 points for its 11th-place finish overall, while the 2V8 took 22 points for its 12th-place showing, and the 1V4 earned 17 points for its sixth-place finish to give Michigan 75 total team points.
