ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team lost a gritty match 1-0 in its second exhibition contest of 2016 against NSCAA national preseason ranked No. 4 Virginia, playing three 30-minute periods on Thursday (Aug. 11) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The only home exhibition contest of the 2016 season started off with a lot of back-and-forth play between U-M and Virginia. The first period was scoreless with the Cavaliers getting off the only shot.
Both teams saw more opportunities in the second period, with Virginia outshooting Michigan, 5-1. Virginia scored the first goal of the game with 21 minutes left in the period. Alexis Shaffer's touch is the box was deflected by a U-M defender, but UVA's Meghan McCool was there to knock the rebound in the right corner of the net just past sophomore goalkeeper Megan Hinz.
Shortly after Virginia's goal, Michigan was awarded a penalty kick with 20 minutes left in the second period. Sophomore forward Reilly Martin stepped up to take the kick, but her shot hit the left post and bounced back into play, and the Wolverines were not able to capitalize.
The Wolverines produced the most chances during the third period, taking four shots compared to the Cavaliers' three. With 16 minutes left in the period, senior/junior Ani Sarkisian pulled the trigger on a breakaway at the top of the box, and her shot went just wide right. Minutes later, freshman Brooke DeSantis took a shot from 14 yards out on the right side of the box toward the upper left corner, where it was tipped wide by the Virginia goalkeeper. U-M was awarded a corner kick that was cleared away with nine minutes left in the third period.
The Wolverines were awarded a second PK with three minutes left in the match. The shot, taken by Sarkisian, was no good as Virginia's keeper laid out to tip it wide.
Several Wolverines saw game action today with a total of 17 players taking the field, including freshmen Jada Dayne and DeSantis and redshirt freshman Katie Foug.
The Wolverines will open their regular season on Friday, Aug. 19, when they host Pittsburgh in a 7:30 p.m. matchup at U-M Soccer Stadium.
