ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior/junior Ani Sarkisian of the University of Michigan women's soccer team scored the game-tying goal with 1:08 remaining in regulation to push the game to overtime, where the Wolverines tied Pittsburgh, 2-2, in the 2016 home opener on Friday (Aug. 19) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
With U-M down 2-1 in the 89th minute, U-M earned a throw in deep in their attacking third, and senior Rosalind Porritt put a long ball into the box. After a few stray touches, senior Nicky Waldeck's shot hit the post, and Sarkisian was there to put in the rebound to tie the match and send it into overtime.
Four minutes into the first overtime, Pittsburgh's free kick hit the crossbar, and the rebound header by the Panthers was saved by junior goalkeeper Megan Hinz, whose body was in the goal, but she extended her arms away from her body to keep the ball from crossing the goal line. With one minute left in the first OT, Pitt's Bel Van Noordern took a good-looking shot from the top of the box, but it sailed just over the bar, sending the game into double overtime.
With four minutes left in the second OT, sophomore Abby Kastroll played the ball into Waldeck in the box, where Waldeck's shot was caught by Pittsburgh goalkeeper Taylor Francis. The Maize and Blue continued to pressure down the stretch but could not manage the go-ahead goal.
The home opener of the 2016 season started off with a lot of back and forth between U-M and Pittsburgh. Things got going in the 22nd minute, when the Wolverines were awarded a free kick about 45 yards out near the right sideline. Sophomore Reilly Martin put a well-struck ball on net that sailed over the head of Pitt's keeper untouched into the upper right 90. The Wolverines' first goal of the 2016 season is Martin's third of her career, as she tallied two during her freshman campaign.
Pittsburgh fired back in the 34th minute as Bri Shingary played the ball from the touch line back to Alex Wright on the left side of the box, and Wright tucked it into the right side of the net to tie the game 1-1.
With the game still tied in the 84th minute and overtime seeming inevitable, Pittsburgh notched the go-ahead goal. The Panthers were awarded a free kick near the left sideline 35 yards out, and Alli Higgs' lofty serve took one hop in the box and floated into the upper right 90, just out of the reach of Hinz.
Many Wolverines saw game action today with a total of 16 players taking the field. Among the starting 11 were freshmen defender Jada Dayne and forward Brooke DeSantis, who officially donned the Maize and Blue for the first time. Redshirt freshman Katie Foug also made her official U-M debut in the 39th minute.
Overall, the Wolverines outshot the Panthers, 15-9, on the game and also held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Wolverines will continue a weekend of home games on Sunday (Aug. 21) when they host Marshall in a 2 p.m. matchup at U-M Soccer Stadium.
