ROTTERDAM, Amsterdam -- University of Michigan rowing junior Kendall Brewer earned gold in the women's four and women's eight at the World Rowing U23 Championships this week.
Brewer capped off a fantastic week this morning in the 'A' final with the women's eight. The U.S. crew took the lead in the first 500 meters of the race and expanded the margin to open water by the 1,000-meter mark. Brewer and the U.S. crew crossed the line in 6:36.90, more than seven seconds ahead of Great Britain (6:44.060) and eight seconds in front of Russia (6:45.500), which finished in second and third place, respectively.
On Thursday morning (Aug. 25), Brewer also won gold in the women's four in another dominant showing for USRowing. In the bow seat, along with Gia Doonan, Regina Salmons and Sarah Dougherty in the four, Brewer and the U.S. crew jumped in front by the 1,000 meter mark and finished well ahead of Romania and the Netherlands in 6:27.280.
Brewer, a native of Austin, Texas, completed her second season on Michigan's 1V8 this spring and was named a Pocock second team All-American. She earned All-Big Ten First Team honors and CRCA All-Region First Team honors previously this season. Rowing in the No. 6 seat at the end of the season, an Academic All-Big Ten selection, Brewer helped Michigan's 1V8 to an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Rowing Championships and a second-place showing at the Big Ten Rowing Championships. The Wolverines were narrowly edged by Ohio State in a photo finish.
Last year, Brewer was also selected by USRowing to compete at the U23 World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, finishing fourth in the quadruple sculls 'A' Final.
