MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team opened up its 2016 Big Ten slate with a 2-1, double-overtime defeat to the Wisconsin Badgers Friday (Sept. 9) at McClimon Complex.
Heading into the half trailing, 10-3, in the shot category and down 1-0 after a Mark Segbers goal in the 27th minute, U-M came storming out of the gates in the opening minutes of the second session.
After fending off an early press from the Badgers in the opening minute of the second stanza, U-M then flipped the script. The mercurial Francis Atuahene was the responsible party, scoring his second goal of the season at the 48:16 mark on an assist from classmate Marcello Borges.
The Wolverines then began to manhandle the Badgers with five shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half. The two teams remained knotted at the end of regulation and headed to U-M's fourth overtime match of the season.
After a scoreless first session, U-M owned a 6-1 shot advantage, bossing the notable chances. However, with a little less than three minutes to go, a Tom Barlow golden goal at the 107:08 mark against the run of play proved to be the difference in the physical matchup.
U-M returns home to take on the Indiana Hoosiers Wednesday (Sept. 14) at 7 p.m. from U-M Soccer Stadium. The match will be shown live via the Big Ten Network. [ Tickets ]
