ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team scored late in the first half and withstood a late barrage to make it stand in a 1-0 decision against rival Ohio State on Friday evening (Sept. 23) in front of 767 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. It marks the Wolverines' sixth straight victory and fifth shutout win of the season.
Freshman Fay Keijer netted the game-winning goal at the 23:58 mark, converting on the Wolverines' fourth penalty-corner opportunity of the contest -- and second of two successive chances -- for her third marker of the season. Freshman Meg Dowthwaite swept the initial shot from the top of the circle, and Keijer laid out in front to get her stick on it and tip it high into the OSU cage.
Despite back-and-forth play through the opening half, Michigan dominated the stat categories, outshooting the Buckeyes, 8-0, and outcornering them, 5-0.
Momentum shifted back and forth in the second as well, with the Wolverines taking advantage of an OSU yellow card to apply sustained pressure in the Buckeye corner midway through the half. Sophomore Emma Way buried a beautiful corner shot to seemingly cushion the U-M lead, but Ohio State challenged the call and won, with the umpires ruling her shot too high.
The disallowed goal swung momentum to the Buckeyes, who drew four corners and fired off five shots in the final 17 minutes of the contest. All but one OSU shot was blocked or wide; junior goalkeeper Sam Swenson earned her lone save with a blocker stop after a broken penalty corner. She also made several great plays to break up Ohio State chances in the circle.
Michigan outshot the Buckeyes, 15-6, and outcornered them, 8-5, through 70 minutes. Ohio State goalkeeper Liz Tamburro earned nine saves on 10 Wolverine shots on goal. Swenson's complete-game shutout is her third of the season.
