BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team won 12 of 16 events in a dominant 211-87 victory over No. 13 Indiana on Friday (Jan. 13) at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Sophomore Siobhán Haughey was sharp yet again, winning a trio of events, while sophomore Yirong Bi, junior Clara Smiddy and freshman Vanessa Krause each won two. The Wolverines went 1-2-3 in five events.
Michigan set the tone from the very beginning, going from two-thirds-of-a-second down at the halfway point of the 200-yard medley relay to winning by more than a half-second (1:40.15), thanks to the butterfly (Krause) and freestyle (Catie DeLoof) legs.
"That first relay was big. I think we took a lot of momentum away from them really quickly," said head coach Mike Bottom. "Our team was ready to swim fast and race. That's what they came for. Indiana is a great team. They beat us at NCAAs last year and gave us a real test at Big Tens. I think the result being what it was is a great confidence booster for our team."
Bi dominated the distance events and looked particularly strong in the 1,000-yard freestyle, touching first by nearly 15 seconds (9:43.77) over teammate G Ryan, who was second (9:58.01). The 500-yard freestyle later in the meet was also fruitful with Bi (4:44.28), Ryan (4:48.28) and sophomore Becca Postoll (4:50.04) going 1-2-3.
Both the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes were taken by Smiddy (54.50, 1:56.55), who was followed in both events by junior Gabby DeLoof (54.72, 1:57.61) and freshman Jacqui Schafer (55.20, 1:58.03).
Haughey won both the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.58) and 200-yard IM (2:00.40) -- the latter by more than three seconds -- and keyed a huge 1-2-3-4 finish in the 100-yard freestyle (48.80). She was followed in that race by Catie DeLoof (49.58), Postoll (51.08) and senior Julia Fiks Salem (51.20). Catie DeLoof also finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (22.78).
Krause, the only Indiana native on the roster (Chesterton), had two real close wins over Indiana's Gia Dalesandro in the butterfly events. She out-touched Dalesandro by .06 seconds to win the 100-yard butterfly (53.22) and got her by nearly half-a-second in the 200-yard butterfly (1:58.04).
The only swimming events Michigan did not win were in the breaststroke, both of which went to Indiana's Lilly King, the U.S. Olympic medalist. Junior Emily Kopas raced King well, ultimately finishing second to her in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.34) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:13.76).
The Wolverines put the exclamation point on the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 400-yard freestyle, but it was the squad's B team of Gabby DeLoof, Postoll, Fiks Salem and Ryan that came in first (3:20.82).
Indiana only put up one diver, allowing Michigan to score points via second-, third- and fourth-place finishes on both the one- and three-meter springboards. Freshman Kristen Hayden was second in both events, scoring 282.45 on one-meter and 309.38 on three-meter.
The Wolverines return to the water in two weeks (Friday, Jan. 27) when they welcome rival Ohio State to Canham Natatorium. The action will begin at 6 p.m. Admission is free.
