ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Redshirt junior Taylor Timko scored the equalizing goal in the 50th minute and freshman Hillary Beall made six saves in goal to lead the University of Michigan women's soccer team in a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Nebraska on Sunday (Oct. 1) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines have now gone to overtime in seven matches this season, tying a program record, and are 1-0-6 in extra time. They extended their unbeaten streak to five matches (2-0-3) with Sunday's draw.
The visitors peppered Beall early and often, holding a 25-9 advantage in shots for the match. Four of her six saves came in the opening 20 minutes, none bigger than a diving effort in the 17th minute to deny a free-kick attempt from Nebraska's Brenna Ochoa.
The Cornhuskers opened the scoring in the 31st minute, as Elyse Huber put a header into the near post off a long cross from Sami Reinhardt.
Despite trailing at the break, the Wolverines needed only a few minutes to tie things up. A yellow card to Nebraska's Sinclair Miramontez gave Michigan a free-kick opportunity right outside the 18-yard box. Martin and freshman Sarah Stratigakis stood over the ball and played two quick touches off the restart to Timko, who unleashed a powerful shot past Nebraska goalkeeper Aubrei Corder to get the home side on the board.
Nebraska turned up the pressure and very nearly went back in front in the 70th minute. A shot from Haley Hanson hit the crossbar, ricocheting the ball back into the field of play. The rebound was put into the back of the net, but the would-be scorer was ruled offsides, negating the go-ahead goal.
The teams were deadlocked the majority of overtime. The last good chance for either side came in the 108th minute on a free kick from Martin right outside the 18, but her shot hit the side netting.
Next up, Michigan will begin a three-game road stretch, starting with a matchup at Penn State on Friday (Oct. 6) at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
