BOSTON, Mass. -- The University of Michigan rowing program was represented by two varsity eight boats at the 53rd annual Head of the Charles regatta on Sunday (Oct. 22), placing its first varsity eight 11th and its second varsity eight 30th among 36 boats.
The Women's Championship Eights race featured 28 of the top collegiate boats and eight club or international boats. U-M's 1V8 boat coxed by Kathryn Boyle fared well on the famous waters of the Charles River, finishing fifth among collegiate programs, and first among Big Ten teams with a time of 15:31.401.
The Maize and Blue came in 27 seconds behind the top collegiate program, Washington (third; 15:03.829), and were just over four seconds shy of a top-10 finish, as both Virginia (15:27.285) and Syracuse (15:27.945) finished within range. U-M's 2V8 boat coxed by Alexis Jones timed 16:13.019 and finished 30th.
It marks the seventh time in the last eight trips to this historic event with at least one Michigan boat earning a top-11 finish, and signaled the close of a strong fall season for head coach Mark Rothstein.
"I thought we rowed well," said Rothstein. "I'm really pleased with how the team is training and working and developing, and this weekend was a good step for us. The theme of this fall has been that we have a long way to go; we are a really young group with a lot of new faces. This fall has been great so far been great in terms of team development, so we need to keep that going and keep training hard and I believe we will have good results."
The grandeur and spectacle of an afternoon on the Charles was not lost on the Wolverines, either, who gain experience as a young group, in addition to valuable team bonding time on a road trip.
"It's a great event and a true spectacle," said Rothstein. "It's a lot of fun for our athletes, because other than Big Ten (Championships) and NCAA's there aren't typically big crowds at our events. Coming here, where you're rowing with hundreds of thousands of people on the shores, it's is a nice thing to take part of."
U-M's varsity squad has wrapped up its fall schedule, while the novice program has one event remaining on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Michigan State.
