ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team returns home to Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena to face Ferris State in a two-game series on Thursday and Friday (Nov. 2-3). Michigan will honor its seven-member 2017 Dekers Hall of Fame class on Friday during the first intermission.
The Ferris State Series
Michigan defeated the Bulldogs, 2-1, on the road last season, marking the 70th win over Ferris State in program history. Michigan is 70-30-4 in the all-time series against the Bulldogs and 43-10-2 at home. The Wolverines have not lost to Ferris State at home in their last 13 matchups, with the most recent loss coming on Feb. 25, 2006, in overtime. Since then, Michigan has recorded 11 wins and two ties against the Bulldogs in Ann Arbor.
Scouting the Bulldogs
Ferris State is led by head coach Bob Daniels, who is now in his 26th season behind the bench for the Bulldogs and the winningest coach in program history. Ferris State is coming off a down year after finishing with a record of 13-19-5 (12-12-4 WCHA) last season. The season prior in 2015-16, the Bulldogs reached 20 wins for the seventh time in Daniels' tenure and fell to Denver in the NCAA West Regional Final. Ferris State finished fifth in the WCHA standings last season and was eliminated by Bowling Green in the WCHA Quarterfinals. The Bulldogs finished last season with a 7-9-2 record on the road and a 1-7-1 mark in non-conference play.
Ferris State was picked to finish fifth in the WCHA this season in both the Mankato Free Press WCHA Men's Hockey Preseason Coaches' Poll and the UAHhockey.com WCHA Men's Hockey Preseason Media Poll. Junior forward Corey Mackin was selected to the Preseason All-WCHA First Team in the UAHHockey.com WCHA Media Poll.
Leading the Bulldogs
Ferris State is led by senior forward Mitch Maloney who has three goals and two assists so far this season. Mackin leads the Bulldogs in assists with four, also notching a goal. In addition to the five points contributed by both Mackin and Maloney, Ferris State has three players who have tallied three points, including junior defenseman Ryker Killins, senior forward Andrew Dorantes and freshman forward Lucas Finner.
Junior goaltender Darren Smith has started four games in net and has a 2-1-1 record, 2.22 goals against average and a .927 save percentage. Sophomore Justin Kapelmaster has a 0-4-0 record in net for Ferris State in addition to a 3.50 goals against average and a .899 save percentage.
Series Split in Happy Valley
The Wolverines opened their Big Ten season on the road in State College, Pennsylvania, with a weekend series at No. 15-ranked Penn State. Michigan split the series, falling in Friday's game in OT but rebounding for a win the following day.
On Friday, Michigan jumped out to an early lead, scoring two goals in the first six minutes of the game. Penn State fought back to tie the game at 2 midway through the second period. From there, both teams traded goals. Senior Dexter Dancs gave Michigan the lead again on his second goal of the game, but the Nittany Lions tied the game up at 3 early in the third period. Less than 90 seconds later, the Wolverines took the lead again on a goal from junior Cooper Marody, his third point of the game. Penn State tied the game at 4 with 1:32 left in regulation, sending the game into overtime. The Nittany Lions then scored 53 seconds into overtime, giving them a 5-4 win over the Wolverines.
In Saturday's game, sophomore Hayden Lavigne earned the win in net after recording 42 saves for the Wolverines. U-M dominated this game from the start, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the second period after two goals from senior captain Tony Calderone and junior Brendan Warren. Penn State scored to cut Michigan's lead to 3-1, but the Wolverines responded with two consecutive goals, including one from Dancs and another from sophomore Nick Pastujov, his first of the season. The Nittany Lions added a second goal, but Michigan held onto its lead, winning the game, 5-2.
Run DMC
Michigan's "DMC" line of Dexter Dancs, Cooper Marody and Tony Calderone totaled 15 points in last weekend's series at Penn State. Marody led the trio with six points, including a goal and five assists. Dancs scored three goals and tallied two assists while Calderone recorded two goals and two assists for the Wolverines.
Just Killin' It
Michigan currently ranks seventh in all of NCAA DI hockey with an 89.3% (25-for-28) penalty kill. The Wolverines successfully killed all of Penn State's nine power-play opportunities last weekend.
Block it Out
Michigan currently ranks tied for third with an average of 18 blocked shots per game and 11th in total blocked shots with 108 on the year.
4 for Four?
With a sweep this weekend Michigan would go 4-0 at home to start off the season for the first time since it did so during the 2011-12 season. That year, U-M kicked off the year with a 6-0 record at home before dropping a 3-2 decision to Western Michigan on Nov. 4, 2011 -- which snapped a program-record 20-game home win streak that dated back to Nov. 12, 2010.
Sibling Rivalry
Ferris State and Michigan are no longer conference rivals since the formation of the Big Ten in 2013, but strong ties between the programs remain. That year brothers C.J. (FSU) and Tyler Motte (UM) faced off; this Thursday and Friday another set of brothers will meet as freshmen on the two teams. Josh Norris has two goals and five points for the Wolverines, while older brother, Coale, has a goal through seven games with the Bulldogs. The Norris brothers' father, Dwayne, played at Michigan State and in the NHL during a 15-year professional career.
Deker Hall of Fame Induction
During intermission of Friday's contest, the Michigan hockey team will be inducting its seven-member 2017 Dekers Hall of Fame class. Jason Boterill, Denny Felsner, Matt Herr, John Madden, Brendan Morrison, Bill Muckalt and Marty Turco will join the prestigious group of Michigan hockey alumni.
Pro Blue Update
Wolverine alum Tyler Motte was called up by the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday, Oct. 30, becoming the 21st U-M product to be on an NHL roster this season -- scoring in his debut later that night.
Captain Calderone and Co.
The University of Michigan hockey team elected senior forward Tony Calderone as captain for the 2017-18 campaign, while classmate Sam Piazza will serve as alternate captain alongside junior defenseman Joseph Cecconi and sophomores Griffin Luce and Jake Slaker.
Calderone becomes the 98th captain in the program's history, joining the likes of Al Renfrew, Red Berenson, Mel Wakabayashi, Brendan Morrison, Kevin Porter and JT Compher, to name a few.
Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena
Red Berenson was honored for his 33 seasons of coaching Michigan hockey when the ice rink inside Yost Arena was officially named the Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena.
The University of Michigan Board of Regents approved on Thursday, Oct. 19 an addition to the naming structure at historic Yost Arena at its monthly meeting. In honor of a legendary figure, the regents formally approved the designation of the ice rink as the Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena.
