BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team won its final match of the 2017 regular season and extended its win streak to five on Friday night (Nov. 24), as the Wolverines swept Indiana in straight sets (25-20, 25-15, 25-15) inside University Gym.
Michigan finished the regular season with a 21-11 overall record and an 11-9 record in conference play. The 11-9 mark against Big Ten opponents ties the 2016 season for the program's best league record since the Wolverines' Final Four appearance in 2012. The win is Michigan's first at Indiana since the 2013 season.
Junior Carly Skjodt led the Michigan offense with nine kills at a .375 clip, while senior Katherine Mahlke and redshirt sophomore Cori Crocker each totaled seven kills. In her first appearance since mid-September, redshirt freshman Ellie Brooks added one kill on one swing.
Sophomore setter MacKenzi Welsh guided the Wolverines to a .326 attack average with 26 assists. She added four kills on five attempts as well as a service ace.
Defensively, Michigan totaled six team blocks, and senior Claire Kieffer-Wright led the way with two solo blocks and two block assists. From the back row, junior libero Jenna Lerg led the Wolverines with 12 digs.
The teams played point for point to begin the first set, but a kill by Kieffer-Wright gave Michigan a defining lead at 11-10. The Wolverines then used the momentum to go up 16-13 and coerce an Indiana timeout. Four kills from Crocker and a .306 attack average in the set allowed Michigan to maintain the lead and take set one, 25-20.
An Indiana service error gave Michigan the first point of the second set, and the Wolverines rallied for a 5-0 lead before the Hoosiers took a timeout. Michigan extended its lead to seven at 15-8 as Indiana called its second timeout. Michigan's .300 attack average and three team blocks were too much for the Hoosiers to overcome as the Wolverines took a 25-15 second-set victory.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 7-3 third-set lead on kills from Skjodt, Mahlke and sophomore Sydney Wetterstrom before the Hoosiers called timeout. Michigan continued to dominate the set and forced a 15-8 lead on a kill from Mahlke before Indiana called its final timeout of the evening. The Michigan offense was unstoppable as the Wolverines posted a .391 hitting percentage and committed just one attack error en route to the 25-15 third-set win.
