
Michigan Falls to No. 14 USC to Wrap Regular Season, Awaits Tournament Fate

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In its regular-season finale, the University of Michigan volleyball team fell to No. 14-ranked USC (23-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-14) in four sets on Friday afternoon (Nov. 28) at Crisler Center.
Michigan (21-10, 11-9 Big Ten) was led by Allison Jacobs, who posted 14 kills, three blocks and an ace. Ella Demetrician added a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Serena Nyambio finished with eight kills and three blocks, while Jenna Hanes hit errorless with seven kills on 13 swings. Morgan Burke and Camille Edwards paced the attack with 20 and 19 assists, respectively. Maddi Cuchran recorded 12 digs.
USC (24-6, 14-5 Big Ten) controlled the opening set despite 12 ties. Michigan erased an early 5-1 deficit and pulled even at 9-9 after a kill from Lydia Johnson. The Wolverines again closed within one at 24-23 after kills from Hanes and Johnson, but USC secured the final point for a 25-23 win.
The second set mirrored the first. Michigan tied the score at 6-6 and again at 16-16 behind two kills each from Jacobs and Demetrician. U-M briefly went ahead 17-16, but USC answered with a 5-1 run and closed the frame 25-22.
Michigan found momentum in the third set. After falling behind 2-0, the Wolverines used an 8-2 run—fueled by two Hanes kills and an ace from Jacobs—to take an 11-6 lead. USC rallied to tie it at 20-20, but Demetrician put U-M up 24-23, and Jacobs finished the set off the block to give Michigan a 25-23 win.
USC held control throughout the fourth set, building a 6-2 lead. Michigan trimmed it to 6-5 after a 3-0 run sparked by a Jacobs kill and block, but the Women of Troy answered and went into the media timeout ahead 15-10. USC closed on a 10-4 run to take the set 25-14 and the match.
The Wolverines now await their postseason fate during the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday (Nov. 30) at 6 p.m. on ESPN.
