INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- Junior Kate Fahey made a run to the round of 16 and sophomore Chiara Lommer reached the quarterfinals of consolation action as the University of Michigan women's tennis team completed action at the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.
Fahey picked up a pair of wins in the first two rounds of the singles main draw, highlighted by a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over No. 14 Gabby Smith from Southern California. Fahey saw her run come to an end at the hands of No. 2-ranked Gabriela Talaba of Texas Tech in the round of 16. After splitting the first two sets, Fahey took a 3-1 lead in the final set, but lost the final five games to end her tournament.
Lommer fell in the first round but rebounded for two straight wins in the singles consolation draw to reach the quarterfinals. Lommer's tournament came to an end in a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Natalie Novotna in the quarters.
Michigan will host one more tournament, the Michigan Invitational, before turning its attention to dual-match play. The Michigan Invitational will be at the Varsity Tennis Center, Jan. 13-15.
