MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team won seven more events and used its depth to post overwhelming victories over Minnesota (246-107), Wisconsin (266-87) and Penn State (280-73) on Saturday (Nov. 4) inside the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
"I told the team after, this is the most successful in-season dual meet that we've ever had," said head coach Mike Bottom. "Our mission was to race, learn how to race better and use that as motivation against some really good Big Ten competition. It was just fun to watch."
"Everybody will take away things they need to work on. We have video of every event and everyone will get a chance to look at those, talk to our coaching staff, set some goals and make some changes as we move forward."
The Wolverines were crisp in all facets on Saturday, winning in the sprints, distances and in diving. The team's best event was the 400-yard IM with a 1-2-3-4 finish from sophomore Charlie Swanson (3:54.53), freshman Ricardo Vargas (3:55.49), junior Stephen Holmquist (3:55.58) and senior PJ Ransford (3:57.00). They also went 1-3-4-5 in the 100-yard butterfly with senior Evan White (47.63), sophomore Miles Smachlo (48.62), junior Jon Burkett (49.03) and sophomore James Jones (49.10).
Sophomore Felix Auböck posted a solid win in the 200-yard freestyle (1:37.22), while Vargas showcased his distance chops with a dominant seven-second win in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:06.55). Sophomore Jake Herremans had a fantastic performance on the one-meter springboard, beating some of the Big Ten's best divers to claim the title (355.55).
The Wolverines also took both relays. The foursome of senior Paul Powers (swimming backstroke), sophomore Jacob Montague, White and graduate student James Peek won the 200-yard medley relay (1:27.84), while Jones, freshman Luiz Gustavo Borges, White and Powers combined on the 400-yard freestyle relay (2:57.92).
Others claiming top-three team-high finishes included Powers (20.09) and Borges (20.44) in the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Rob Zofchak in the 200-yard backstroke (1:48.71) and Montague in the 200-yard breaststroke (54.52).
The Michigan divers will be back in Minneapolis again next week for the Minnesota Diving Invite, beginning Thursday (Nov. 9) at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. The swimmers will next be in the water for the Georgia Fall Invitational, held Dec. 1-3 in Athens, Georgia.
