ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Three University of Michigan men's soccer players have been named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region team, the organization announced Friday (Dec. 1). Junior Francis Atuahene and sophomore Jack Hallahan made the all-region second team, while junior Robbie Mertz earned a spot on the third team.
Hallahan led the team in all notable offensive categories, pacing U-M in goals (nine), assists (seven) and points (25). An All-Big Ten first team selection, Hallahan ranked No. 2 in the league in points per game (1.25) and total points, third in assists, and fourth in total goals. Additionally, he had a goal and assist in four matches on the campaign.
An All-Big Ten second team pick, Atuahene missed a portion of the season due to injury but was still able to score six markers, including the match-winning goals against Detroit (Oct. 25) and in the Big Ten regular-season clincher at Maryland (Oct. 29). Atuahene led the Big Ten in shots per game (4.07) and ranked seventh nationally after registering 61 shots on the year.
Mertz, a team tri-captain and all-conference second team honoree, was the lone Wolverine to start all 20 matches and led the team in minutes played (1,755). A midfield dynamo, he registered a trio of goals and four assists in all.
The three honorees tie for the second-most Michigan all-region selections in a season, matching the total from the 2001 season. The program standard of four was set during the 2008 campaign.
