ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Ivo Cerda of the University of Michigan men's soccer team was named to Academic All-America First Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday (Dec. 7).
Previously, Cerda was named to the All-District Five team. To be eligible for initial selection, nominated student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve with a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade-point average in his second year at the current institution and must have played in at least 50 percent of the team's games.
An all-district honoree a year ago, the Santiago, Chile, native started all 16 matches in which he appeared. The tri-captain also scored three goals to go along with an assist for the 2017 Big Ten Champion Wolverines.
A cellular and molecular biology major, two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, and two-time U-M Academic Achievement winner, Cerda also was named the U-M Academic Rookie of the Year for earning the highest GPA of any freshman student-athlete in 2016.
Cerda is the second CoSIDA Academic All-America honoree in program history, as Matt Niemeyer earned the honor in 2004.
