WOLVERINE BITES
U-M is ranked No. 11 in the CGA Coaches Poll and No. 12 in the Road to Nationals standings. As a team, Michigan ranks in the top-10 in the NCAA in three events, highlighted by a seventh-place ranking on vault (70.500), eighth on floor (69.217) and ninth on pommel horse (65.033). The Wolverines have seen consistent performances by Emyre Cole on vault (4th, 14.750), Anthony Stefanelli on floor (tied for 11th, 14.283) and Ryan Dunning on still rings (19th, 14.050).
At the 2017 Winter Cup Challenge, three Wolverines, notably all underclassmen, finished in the top 15 on vault. In his return to vault competition for the first time this season after recovering from an offseason injury, reigning 2016 NCAA and Big Ten Vault champion Anthony McCallum snagged the vault title with scores of 14.90 and 14.95. Cole, with three event titles already this season, placed third on vault with a two-score total of 29.400 and competed in the all-around for U-M. Only a freshman and a first-time Winter Cup senior competitor, Mitchell Brown showcased poise and power as he advanced to the event finals and earned 14th on the table.
Cal is ranked No. 8 in the CGA Coaches Poll and No. 10 in the Road to Nationals standings (404.833). As a team, the Golden Bears are No. 4 on high bar (69.667), No. 5 on floor (70.177), No. 9 on still rings (68.367) and No. 10 on vault (70.283).
Overall, Cal is led by all-around Aaron Mah, who ranks No. 10 in the NCAA with a three-score average of 81.417 and is No. 3 in the NCAA on floor (14.617). On high bar, Yordan Aleksandrov ranks seventh with a three-score average of 14.417.
The Wolverines are 4-0 all-time against the Bears in dual meets, with the last matchup coming on Feb. 2, 2013, in Ann Arbor.
With the meet being the first competition weekend following the Winter Cup, NCAA men's gymnastics reverts to a five up, five count scoring system, eliminating the dropping of the lowest score of a team on a certain event.
