ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team won the doubles point and five out of six singles matches to clinch a 6-1 win over University of South Florida on Sunday (Feb. 5) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan came away with the match's first point, with tiebreak wins at No. 2 and No. 1 doubles. Juniors Runhao Hua and Alex Knight were the first match completed, winning the tiebreak, 7-3 at No. 2. Senior Jathan Malik and freshman Connor Johnston secured the doubles point for the Wolverines with an upset over No. 39 Peter Bertran and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy, 7-6 (7-5 tiebreak).
Knight pushed the Wolverine lead to 2-0 with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over No. 77-ranked Peter Bertran at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Myles Schalet improved to 4-0 on the season in dual-match singles play with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 2, fighting off a 5-3 deficit in the second set, and pushing U-M to the brink of a team victory.
After yielding a point to the Bulls at No. 5, junior Carter Lin clinched the team victory for the Maize and Blue with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win at No. 6.
Michigan also picked up wins at No. 1 by Malik (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) and Hua at No. 4 (6-7 (5), 7-5, 1-0 (10-5).
Michigan will be on the road for their next match when it travels to New York on Friday (Feb. 10) to take on Columbia University.
