PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team was tied with No. 17 Stanford with under 22 minutes to go but was outscored 7-2 down the stretch, eventually dropping a 15-10 decision Tuesday (Feb. 28) inside Laird Q. Cagan Stadium at Moloney Field.
Sophomore/freshman goalie Alli Kothari set a new program record, making a career-high 15 saves in cage for the Wolverines. On the offensive end, Jess Angerman scored a season-high four goals, including a first-half hat trick. Kim Coughlan and Kelly Schlansker each tallied a pair of goals, while Allie Breitfeller and Sophie duPhily added one apiece. Schueler also matched a program record with seven draw controls to help Michigan win the draw, 17-10.
Stanford took an early 2-0 lead six minutes into the game, but then Angerman caught fire, scoring three goals in just over four minutes to put Michigan in front, 3-2, with 19:20 left in the opening half. The Cardinal answered with two goals to take a 4-3 lead, and then U-M scored three of the next four goals to briefly steal the lead, 6-5, at 8:55. DuPhily, Coughlan and Breitfeller each recorded a goal during that stretch. Stanford scored the last two goals of the half to hold a 7-6 lead at the break.
Angerman scored the first goal of the second half, her fourth of the night, to tie the game for the sixth time at 23:43. Stanford scored a minute and a half later, and Schueler won the ensuing draw and passed it ahead to Coughlan, who went straight for goal and tied the game, 8-8, with 21:59 remaining. Shortly after, Coughlan, who had two goals and had taken all of U-M's draws to that point, was flagged with her second yellow card, forcing her to miss the rest of the game.
Over the next 10 minutes, the Cardinal scored four unanswered goals to take a 12-8 lead with 11:50 on the clock. Schlansker, who made her first appearance in the second half, slowed Stanford's momentum with a low lefty goal on an assist from Adriana Pendino, but the Cardinal came right back with three more goals to pull away, 15-9. The Wolverines kept fighting, and Schueler fed Schlansker for her second goal of the night with 1:42 left in the game to produce the final score of 15-10 and help U-M reach double-digit goals for the first time this season.
