
Michigan Runs Past Mercer in NCAA First Round Matchup

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked and seeded University of Michigan women's lacrosse team ran past Mercer 18-8 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday (May 8) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wolverines (13-6) outscored the Bears (13-7) in all four quarters, including earning a running clock in the final quarter. Junior Emma Bradbury (five goals, two assists) and senior Calli Norris (four goals, two assists) combined for nine goals and four assists. Peyton Shreves, Truus van Wees, and Emerson Pattillo each netted two goals for the Wolverines. Norris added three draw-control wins and two ground balls, while Bradbury had four ground balls and one caused turnover.
Sophomore Emma Burke dominated the draw control with 11 wins as Michigan outdrew Mercer 19-7, while Shreves, Jordyn Harrison and Norris each had two ground balls. Senior Grace Callahan broke the Michigan career ground balls record with her 112th.
Freshman Elizabeth Johnson made five saves in the first half, while Madeline Jensen stopped three shots in the second half.
Mercer netted the first goal of the game two minutes in, but it was all Michigan for the remainder of the first quarter. The Wolverines scored five straight goals, including two from Bradbury, to take a 5-1 lead into the second stanza.
The Bears outscored U-M 3-1 in the first 12 minutes of the second quarter to come within two, 6-4. The Wolverines averaged a goal a minute in the final three minutes of the quarter to carry a 9-4 advantage into the halftime break.
Mercer worked its way within three to start the third quarter before Michigan finished the quarter with four straight goals, with back-to-back goals from Norris. U-M carried the run into the fourth quarter with a goal from Bradbury and one from Caroline Byrd to take a 15-6 advantage.
Patillo added back-to-back goals in the fourth quarter to run the clock as Michigan cruised to victory.
Michigan will take on the winner of No. 6 Stanford vs. No. 19 Penn State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at 1 p.m. on Sunday (May 10)at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The contest will be streamed live on ESPN+.
