ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team staged a valiant comeback effort after trailing by four goals with 10 minutes to play but came up just short, falling to High Point, 13-12, on Friday (March 10) inside Michigan Stadium.
Jess Angerman and Tess Korten paced the Wolverines with six points each. Angerman matched a career high with four goals and added two assists, while Korten had three goals and matched her career high with three assists. Angerman has scored at least three goals in each of the last three games, scoring 11 goals during that stretch. Anna Schueler tallied two goals and one assist, while Kim Coughlan recorded a pair of goals and Natalie Carti added one.
Michigan has now won the draw in five of seven games this season, holding a 17-10 edge over the Panthers today. Schueler pulled in a game-high six draw controls, while Coughlan added four and Gabby Burns recorded a career-high three draw controls.
High Point scored the first goal of the game at 24:11 on a free-position shot, but Coughlan answered for the Wolverines, scoring just 26 seconds later to tie it up, 1-1. Angerman scored her first goal of the game at 17:33 to give Michigan its first and only lead of the game, 2-1.
The Panthers then went on a 4-0 run in eight-plus minutes to take a 5-2 lead. The Wolverines responded by scoring three of the last four goals of the half to cut their deficit at halftime to one, 6-5, with one goal each from Korten, Angerman and Coughlan.
In the first half, the Wolverines won the draw, 8-4, and U-M goalie Alli Kothari recorded five of her nine saves for the night.
The second half was a game of three-goal runs, and High Point began by scoring three unanswered goals to go up 9-5 with 27 minutes to go. The Wolverines went on a 3-0 run of their own that started with back-to-back free-position goals from Korten and ended with Schueler finding Angerman for the score at 21:53.
High Point continued the pattern, recording another 3-0 streak before Schueler ended the run with a free-position goal to bring Michigan within three, 12-9, with 9:22 to play in the game. Angerman then scored, as Korten found her on the fast break for the quick goal at the 3:21 mark. Following Angerman's goals, the game underwent a one-hour delay due to a building mechanical failure at Michigan Stadium.
After the all-clear was given and play resumed, Michigan won the draw and Schueler was awarded a free-position attempt less than 30 seconds later. She converted, pulling Michigan with one goal, 12-11, with 2:42 to play. High Point's Erica Perrotta gave the Panthers a two-goal cushion with 1:54 left, but Carti came right back on the assist from Angerman, making it a one-goal game once again with 1:32 on the clock. HPU won the final draw and called timeout before running on the clock on the Wolverines.
