U-M Wins Three Sunday Races to Close Cardinal Invite

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -- The University of Michigan rowing team won three of its four races on Sunday (March 12), closing out the season-opening weekend with 11 total first-place finishes out of 12 possible races at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational, hosted by the University of Louisville.
The team continued to show its mettle on the final day of the weekend after having won all eight races during the two Saturday sessions, this time competing against faster boats from Virginia, Tennessee and conference rival Michigan State. Weather was similar to that of Saturday's afternoon (March 11) races, with the temperature creeping up near 40 degrees and relatively still winds.
In the first of three morning sessions, Michigan won three of four races, including the first varsity eight. The 1V8 crew finished in 6:23.194, holding a lead of more than five seconds over second-place Virginia (6:28.789).
The 2V8 (6:28.877) and 2V4 (7:19.550) boats picked up their fourth respective wins of the weekend, while the 1V4 timed 7:21.420, coming in behind Virginia (7:14.940) for the lone second-place finish of the weekend.
After a weekend off from competition, the Maize and Blue will resume action back in Michigan on Belleville Lake, where the team will host Harvard, Yale and the Michigan State novices on Saturday, March 25, at 9 a.m.
