EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team clinched all doubles and singles points en route to a 7-0 victory over Michigan State to kick off Big Ten Conference play on Friday evening (March 17) at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
The Wolverines claimed the doubles point after victories on courts two and three. The duo of Alex Knight and Runhao Hua claimed the first win on court two (6-0) and improved to 7-1 on the year, while Connor Johnston and Gabe Tishman clinched the first point of the match on court three with a 6-3 win.
Michigan's second point came on court two in singles play, when Knight won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Playing in his second singles dual match of the year, Johnston claimed the Maize and Blue's third point with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6.
Carter Lin picked up his team-leading eighth singles victory in a row, which also clinched the match for Michigan, winning on court four (6-2, 6-3).
With additional victories at No. 3, 5 and 1, Michigan secured the sweep of its in-state foe while also improving its all-time record against Michigan State, 100-19.
The Wolverines will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Penn State on Friday (March 24) and then host No. 2 Ohio State on Sunday (March 26) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Admission is free at the VTC.
