WOLVERINE BITES
• Five of the six Big Ten women's lacrosse head coaches are alums of the University of Maryland. Michigan's Jennifer Ulehla (1990-91) and Maryland's Cathy Reese (1995-98) both played for the Terps, as did Northwestern's Kelly Amonte Hiller (1993-96), Penn State's Missy Doherty (1994-97) and Ohio State's Alexis Venechanos (2000-03).
• Michigan continues to lead the Big Ten in caused turnovers per game, averaging 10.1 per outing. Emily Braun has a team-high 19 caused turnovers, including a career-high four against Winthrop last week. She also leads the Big Ten with 1.58 per game. With five games remaining, Braun has already set a personal record for caused turnovers in a single season. Madeline Dion holds the program record for caused turnovers in a season with 27 during the 2015 season. Braun is also averaging 2.0 ground balls per game, which rank tied for seventh in the Big Ten.
• Michigan has four players with 20-plus points this season, led by Jess Angerman's 33 points, which includes 20 goals and a team-best 13 assists. Kim Coughlan leads U-M with 21 goals, while Anna Schueler has 17 goals and 12 assists, and Tess Korten has 13 goals and nine assists.
• Coughlan (109G+14A=124P), Angerman (104G+51A=155P), Schueler (103G+43A=146P) and Korten (91G+28A=119P) have each surpassed 100 career points, while Coughlan, Angerman and Schueler have also reached 100 career goals. They are the first players in program history to reach those milestones. In their four years at Michigan, that group of four has combined to score 66 percent of U-M's goals (407-of-612) and tally 68 percent of its overall points (544-of-799).
• Schueler is the only U-M player to record at least one point in all 12 games, tallying 17 goals and 12 assists to date. In addition, Schueler is the only Wolverine to start all 64 games in Michigan's four years as a varsity program.
• Schueler has a team-high 54 draw controls this season, which match her highest single-season total in draw controls, which she set her freshman season. In last week's game vs. Northwestern, Schueler became the first player in program history to reach 200 career draw controls. She now has 203, which is more than double any other player in program history. She is third in the Big Ten, averaging 4.5 per game this season.
• Goalies Alli Kothari (1-7) and Mira Shane (3-1) have both seen significant time in cage this season. Shane earned the decisions in Michigan's last four games and was named the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Week on March 21. Against No. 14 Northwestern, Shane matched her career record of nine saves in a single game. Overall, Shane has played 274 minutes, earning a goals-against average of 11.15 and a save percentage of .433. Kothari has played 450 minutes and owns a goals-against average of 12.25 and a save percentage of .418. Kothari's 15 saves against No. 17 Stanford (Feb. 28) are tied for the second most by a Big Ten goalie this season.
• Maryland will mark the fourth ranked opponent the Wolverines have faced this season. Michigan is currently 0-3 against ranked opponents with losses to No. 8 Notre Dame (12-5), No. 17 Stanford (15-10) and No. 14 Northwestern (10-8). U-M will also face nationally ranked Penn State (No. 6) next month.
Scouting Maryland:
Under the direction of 11th-year head coach Cathy Reese, Maryland is one of two remaining undefeated teams in Division I women's lacrosse this season (Colorado), boasting a 9-0 record, including a 1-0 mark in Big Ten play. As a team, Maryland is leading the Big Ten and is third in the nation in goals per game, averaging 15.89, while allowing just 8.33 goals per game, which is ninth in the NCAA. Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Taylor's goals-against average of 8.16 ranks second in the Big Ten and ninth in the NCAA. Maryland lost a talented senior class last year that included three-time Tewaaraton Award winner Taylor Cummings. U-M's 2016 leading scorer, attacker Megan Whittle, is pacing the Terrapins again this season with 28 goals, averaging 3.11 per game, which rank second in the conference. Hartshorn has a team-high 47 draw controls and also has 18 goals and five assists this season.
