Kornacki Postgame Feature: Freshman Lefty Henry Making a Statement in Bullpen
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite a 14-strikeout effort by the Wolverine pitching staff, the No. 13-ranked University of Michigan baseball team came up short on Friday evening (April 21), falling to Indiana by a score of 1-0 in the first of three games inside the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Indiana got on the board quickly, as leadoff hitter Tony Butler sent a home run over the left-center field fence in the first at-bat at the contest. Despite the quick lead change, junior lefty starter Oliver Jaskie quickly settled in, recording 10 strikeouts while surrendering just five hits in 6.2 innings. Jaskie did not allow another run through the rest of his outing.
The Wolverines managed to put some pressure on the Hoosiers, recording six hits in four separate innings, but failed to bring any of their base runners around to score. After nine shutout innings, the Hoosiers took home the series opener in a 1-0 victory.
Sophomore Ako Thomas recorded the first hit of the day for the Wolverines, extending his reached-base streak to 38 games with an infield single in the bottom of the first. Senior Michael Brdar had a multi-hit outing, recording singles in both the first and fifth innings. The Wolverines threatened with runners on in four separate frames but did not reach base from the sixth inning on.
Following Jaskie's departure, senior righty Mac Lozer appeared in the top of the seventh. He came in with two men on and two outs and got a ground out to end the inning with nothing hurt. In the top of the eighth, freshman righty Tommy Henry appeared in relief for the Wolverines, striking out four and holding the Hoosiers scoreless through the next two innings.
The No. 13-ranked Wolverines will look to rebound from the loss on Saturday afternoon (April 22) when they host Indiana for the second game of the weekend series. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
