AUSTIN, Texas -- Three throwers represented the University of Michigan women's track and field team on day one of the Texas Longhorn Invitational on Friday (April 28), and three throwers finished the day with career-best marks in the hammer throw at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Courtney Jacobsen tied her personal record on her sixth-and-final throw to lead the way with a fifth-place finish, while Meagan Malloy and Bailey Baker both just missed the nine-woman finals in 10th- and 11th-place, respectively.
Matching her best mark of the year and reaffirming her status as the No. 2 hammer thrower in Michigan history, Jacobsen saved her best for last with a heave of 59.64m (195-8) to close out the competition.
The freshman was in danger of not making the final at all, needing a toss of 57.13m (187-5) on her third attempt to vault from 13th to fifth. She improved again on her fifth throw to 58.52m (192-0) before her grand finale.
An unfortunate side effect of Jacobsen's advancement to the final was that it displaced Meagan Malloy outside of the nine-woman final. For her part, Malloy opened the day with a career-best 56.19m (184-4) heave to move up to No. 5 on the all-time U-M performers list in the event.
She, in turn, displaced Baker to No. 6 on the all-time list -- though Baker also crossed the 56-meter barrier for the first time with a mark of 56.08m (184-0) on her third toss. With two throws that stayed in fair territory, Baker ran up her count of throws superior to her 2016 career best in the event to 16. She has yet to throw shorter than her 2016 best of 51.47m (168-10).
The remainder of the throws crew is in action Saturday (April 29) in the discus and shot put.

Fish leapt 5.77m (18-11) on her very first of six attempts to take ninth place in a crowded long jump field. She closed out the day nearly as strong as she finished it, soaring to a mark of 5.71m (18-8.75) on her sixth-and-final attempt.
Heptathletes Aaron Howell and Tiana Luton finished 21st and 30th, respectively. Howell jumped 5.48m (17-11.50), while Luton tied her outdoor PR at 5.22m (17-1.5).
