PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The 17th-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team defeated Valparaiso, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday (May 12) at the Taube Family Tennis Center. The Wolverines will move on to the second round and will take on No. 16 Stanford tomorrow (Saturday, May 13) at 4 p.m. PDT, with a trip to the round of 16 in Athens, Georgia, on the line.
After dropping court one in doubles play, Michigan rallied with victories on courts three and two to clinch the doubles point. The duo of Myles Schalet and Kevin Wong grabbed a 6-3 triumph on court three, while Alex Knight and Runhao Hua took No. 2 by a score of 7-5.
In singles play, Knight made quick work on court two, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The Maize and Blue came to the brink of a team win after extending the lead to 3-0 as Carter Lin won No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-4. Lin extended his team-leading win streak to seven matches in singles play.
With the remaining matches all going into three sets, Michigan came out victorious and moves on to the next round after Hua took No. 4 singles 6-3, 0-6, 6-3.
