TOLEDO, Ohio -- Despite cold and rainy conditions, throwers from the University of Michigan women's track and field team turned in solid efforts on day one of the Toledo Invitational on Thursday (May 4) at the UT Outdoor Track & Field Facility.
With periodic rain and temperatures in the 40s, Meagan Malloy was the runner-up in the hammer throw. She tossed a 54.74m (179-7) mark on her very first attempt that stood up to all but one competitor in the field.
In the shot put, Maegan McCarthy and Briana Nelson finished fifth and sixth overall, respectively. McCarthy tossed 12.53m (41-1.25) on her second of six throws, while Nelson moved up a spot on her final throw with a mark of 12.21m (40-0.75).
Christina Hallmann also finished fifth in her event, the discus. On her first throw, Hallmann hurled the disc 40.64m (133-4) -- a distance matched by Anna Bellman of Toledo. However, Hallman's second throw of 40.13m (131-8) was enough to break that tie in her favor.
Mid-distance, jumps and throws events for the Wolverines begin Friday (May 5) around noon.
