SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Competing for one final time in the Maize and Blue of the University of Michigan, senior track and field star Steven Bastien made the most of his Wolverine finale with a strong showing at the USATF Outdoor Championships on Friday (June 23).
The senior from Saline finished fourth overall in the decathlon with 7,836 points, matching his fourth-place result from the NCAA Championships earlier this month.
Though he came up just one spot shy of outright making the three-man roster of decathletes that will represent Team USA at the IAAF World Championships in London later this summer, he would be the next in line if one man were to withdraw and he achieved the 8,100-point qualifying standard between now and July 23.
He previously scored a school-record 8,015 points at the NCAA Championships.
Bastien kicked off his final day with a strong 14.82 in the 110-meter hurdles, despite running into a stiff 1.1m/s headwind.
He posted solid marks of 39.55m (129-9) in the discus and 4.70m (15-5) in the pole vault, but it was his javelin throw that buoyed him the most on Friday. He came within 28 centimeters of his career best with a toss of 55.60m (182-5) on his final attempt.
Rounding out the 10-event competition was his 4:36.88 clocking at 1javascript:__doPostBack('ctl00$cplhMainContent$storyManager','images'),500 meters.
While Bastien was closing out his career, several other freshman Wolverines were just closing out the very first chapters of their Michigan stories at the USATF Junior Championships.
Courtney Jacobsen posted the best finish of any of the U-M freshmen with a runner-up finish in the hammer throw. Jacobsen, who scored with an eighth-place finish in this event at the Big Ten Championships, heaved a mark of 56.67m (185-11) on her fourth throw to secure the result.
Isaac Harding and Jacob Branch took fifth and seventh, respectively, in the junior 5,000 meters final. Harding crossed the line in 14:33.86, followed by Branch in 14:47.61.
Hurdler Roland Amarteifio ran a career-best 14.08 (-0.2m/s) to finish ninth in the 110-meter hurdles, just missing the eight-man final by .06. He also neared his career best in the 400-meter hurdles later in the day, running 53.80 for 22nd place.
Men's volunteer assistant coach and former U-M standout Mason Ferlic was the lone pro Wolverine in action Friday, advancing to the Sunday 3,000-meter steeplechase final with an 8:38.68 clocking.
U-M action on Saturday includes incoming freshman Camille Davre in the women's junior 1,500 meters, pros Amanda Eccleston and Shannon Osika in the women's senior 1,500 meters final, and two-time Olympian Jeff Porter in the 110-meter hurdles prelims.
